About This Scholarship

The G. Gordon Yoder TV NewsVideo Workshop Scholarship is a $1,000 grant awarded annually to a working television news photographer to attend the NPPA News Video Workshop in Norman, Oklahoma. Established in 2000 by G. Gordon Yoder and his wife Irene through a major donation to the National Press Photographers Foundation, the scholarship honors Yoder’s legacy as a pioneer in broadcast news photography.

Yoder began his photo career as a child and became a trailblazer in television news, shooting for Paramount News and Telenews before founding his own company, Gordon Yoder Inc. He was instrumental in revolutionizing news cameras by increasing film capacity and enabling portable sound recording. His innovations helped shape modern TV news coverage.

A winner of NPPA’s Photographer of the Year and recipient of the Sprague Award, Yoder was a passionate storyteller and engineer who devoted his life to improving the tools of journalism and mentoring others in the craft.
