The Hutchison/Wheeler Storytelling Award is a $2,000 scholarship that supports aspiring video photojournalists who need financial assistance to attend the NPPA Advanced Storytelling Workshop. This immersive workshop is designed to inspire, teach, and transform the careers of early-career visual journalists through hands-on learning and mentorship.
The scholarship is named in honor of Chris Wheeler and Sonny Hutchison, two award-winning visual storytellers who co-founded the successful production companies Great Divide Pictures and High Noon Entertainment. Together, they have produced landmark films for the National Park Service and created acclaimed documentary series, including How the West Was Lost for the Discovery Channel. Both Hutchison and Wheeler began their careers in local television news and credit NPPA’s storytelling workshops as pivotal to their development.
This award is intended for those who may not otherwise have the financial means to attend the workshop. The goal is to empower beginner video photojournalists by offering them an opportunity to improve their storytelling, build confidence, and gain insights from some of the industry’s best.
