Bob Lynn was assistant managing editor/graphics at The Virginian-Pilot (Norfolk, VA), where he served as its photojournalism leader for 17 years. During that time, The Pilot was recognized annually for its photojournalistic excellence in the University of Missouri’s Pictures of the Year competition, including three first-place awards for Best Use of Pictures for large metropolitan newspapers.

Lynn previously worked as graphics editor at the Charleston Gazette (WV), where he helped build its reputation for excellence in photography. Earlier, he was a reporter and photographer at The Cincinnati Enquirer and The Los Angeles Times. He began his 38-year career as a sports reporter at the Wilmington Morning Star (NC).

He authored Vision, Courage & Heart, a book on visual journalism leadership and management, selling nearly 2,000 copies and donating over 1,100 to professionals and students. An e-book edition will be released soon.

Lynn earned his B.A. in journalism from Marshall University and a master’s in journalism from Ohio University. In 1971, he was named Ohio News Photographer of the Year and earned national recognition for his reporting on nuclear electric power.

Among his many honors, Lynn received NPPA’s Joseph Sprague Memorial Award, the Joseph Costa Award, the John Durniak Mentor Citation, and the Clifton C. Edom Award. He was also inducted into the Hall of Fame of the Cincinnati Chapter of the Society of Professional Journalists.

Lynn taught photojournalism as an adjunct professor at Syracuse University, including a semester at its London campus, and served as faculty at numerous workshops and seminars.
