About This Scholarship

Established in 2018, the C. Thomas and Mary C. Hardin Documentary Photojournalism Scholarship awards $2,000 to an undergraduate or graduate student working in still or video documentary photojournalism. Administered by the National Press Photographers Foundation (NPPF), the scholarship honors students who demonstrate a strong ability to explain the human condition or cultural developments with depth, interpretation, and personal initiative.

The Hardins believe documentary photojournalism uniquely captures human stories and preserves history. This scholarship supports students at four-year U.S. colleges or universities who share that belief and need support to pursue their craft.

C. Thomas Hardin is a past president of both NPPA and NPPF, and a Pulitzer Prize-winning former director of photography at The Courier-Journal. He also led photojournalism at The Detroit News and created the influential NPPA-Nikon Documentary Sabbatical Grant. His legacy includes decades of leadership, mentorship, and advocacy for meaningful, impactful visual storytelling.
