The Mary Lou Foy Scholarship supports undergraduate and graduate students studying photojournalism with a concentration in still photography and multimedia. Funded by members of the NPPA Booster Club—especially NPPA life members—this scholarship honors the career and legacy of Mary Lou Foy, a trailblazing photojournalist and longtime advocate for visual journalism.
Foy began her career in 1971 as the first woman photojournalist at the Gainesville Sun. She went on to break more barriers at the Miami Herald and later served as a picture editor at The Washington Post from 1990 to 2006. Throughout her career, she held numerous leadership roles in the National Press Photographers Association, including president in 1992–93, and received many of NPPA’s top awards.
This scholarship recognizes students who demonstrate excellence in storytelling through both still and multimedia formats, following in the footsteps of a pioneering journalist who helped shape the future of the profession.
